Removing Roof Fungus

Shingle roofs are manufactured with different degrees of quality. Most roofs applied by builders and roofing contractors are in the low to medium quality range with few, if any, fungus fighting elements like zinc or copper. Higher quality roofs are generally found on expensive custom homes and where the owner has taken a special interest in the quality of the roof.

The black growth covering roofs is a fungus. This fungus, because it lacks chlorophyll, is unable to manufacture food from raw materials as other plants do. It must therefore get nutrition from some form of organic matter. When this fungus receives its nutrition from dead organic matter, it is called a saprophyte. This particular fungus also requires a warm humid environment to thrive in.

Just how does this apply to a roof? The spores that settle on the northern exposure of the roof typically stand a better chance of survival because it is normally the last part of the roof to dry after rain or morning dew. Once the sun heats the roof, the moisture trapped around the base of the ceramic granules begins evaporating. This raises the humidity on the surface of the shingle, thus creating a perfect breeding environment.

Again, black fungus requires three things to grow: heat, moisture, and a nutrient. Nutrients can be found within the shingle themselves while other variables contribute to and hasten fungus growth. Add to that, the type, grade and manufacturer of the shingle, the age of the roof, the close proximity of trees, pool, or lake, how hot and humid the weather is and if there are leaves accumulating on the roof. Now, you have most of the answer to the question why your roof turns black.

WHAT B&B CLEANING COMPANY CAN DO FOR YOU:

We have the experience, training and right products to know how to properly clean and maintain your roof. The soap we use is both powerful and environmentally safe and is used to dislodge the fungus so it can be easily flushed from the roof without damaging the shingles integrity. The sad truth is however, that once your roof has been cleaned, it will get stained again quicker, sometimes a lot quicker than it did the first time. This is because its fungus-fighting capabilities have been diminished over time. We can help you keep your roof cleaned and well maintained with our maintenance plan.
